Mono Monday-Performance break

20130211-205240.jpg

A fresh off the sensor image today taken this weekend. After having to make a visit to the bank I decided that I would go for a walk along the seafront with my camera to see if anything would catch my eye. A bit of street photography to get my mind working. I had decided to go in super stealth mode taking nothing but my trusty Fujifilm X10 compact. No bags or tripods, the idea was NOT to look like a photographer. I just walked along, camera in one hand by my side, observing things as I went along. If I saw something I liked the look of, I would either shoot from the hip or quickly bring the camera up to eye level focus and snap, moving on straight after so as to not bring attention to myself. It’s quite a challenge and very hit and miss. I’m certainly no expert but it’s a lot of fun and something I try to do every now and then.
I certainly prefer black and white when it comes to people photos and this shot definitely called for mono.

I have been invited to be guest expert on the subject of monochrome photography over at the panachallenge.com forum for the next four weeks, so hop on over and take a look at what the community is up to.

Mono Monday

20121224-155354.jpg

It’s time to get my Mono Monday series back up and running, so here is a pic taken at a churchyard near my place of work…and it was shot on film!
I’ve been a fan of all things lomography for quite some time but never had the motivation to get back into the film world…until very recently that is. In fact it was on my birthday that my interest for film was properly re-ignited when I was given a lomography Diana Mini as a present, along with two rolls of Ilford HP5 black and white film. This photo is one of the more successful frames from the first roll. I’m also borrowing a cheapo film scanner in order to transfer to the PC.
Expect to see more Lomo shots from me here in the future, both mono and colour.

I see it is also Dec 24th, so ill finish by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I’m back

20121223-222523.jpg

It has been quite some time, has it not. However, lets us not dwell on that and get straight back into things
Welcome to what I’m calling Hospital A. This is from a part of what’s left of and old mental asylum somewhere in the South of England. Mostly redeveloped, there are just a handful of buildings left to explore. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve done any urbex photography, but I’m glad to have found this place.
With any luck I’ll be able to get back into the swing of things and post more regularly.

Up early again

Yes, your truly managed to pull himself out of bed for another mornings shoot. This time I wanted to make some images at a stretch of beach between Hastings and Bexhill, having passed this beach many times on the train and seeing the large amount of rock exposed while the tide is out I had to make a visit. Once again the sky was too clear for my liking but this was not that much of a problem as there was more than enough going on in the foreground. I arrived at the beach while it was still dark to give me plenty of time to look for the best spot, and just as it was starting to get light I happened upon this area, where there was a nice mix of rock, sand ripples and water. Happy with my location I went about trying to find the best composition.

I was most pleased to find this patch where the sand and water seems to sweep around the bottom of the picture. I took this landscape version first then took the vertical shot (above). I like both versions but there is something about the vertical one that seems to connect the viewer to the scene even more,  a greater sense of ‘being there’ perhaps. Maybe that’s just me though.

Having tried a few different compositions I headed out to the waters edge in an attempt to get some misty water action, but alas the tide (once again) was too calm. Due to the increase in light my exposures were rapidly getting shorter and by the time I found this group of rocks I was lucky if I got a couple of seconds at f22.

All of this happened before the sun had got over the horizon; in fact when it did rise the atmosphere had all but evaporated and I ended up tripping the shutter only a couple more times. Happy with my results I packed up and headed for home and a nice mug of coffee.
