Self (Movember half way mark)
For this weeks Movember update I decided to do a moody self portrait for a bit for fun. 🙂
Processed using Topaz B&W Effects and Lightroom 5.
Recently a friend of ours gave me a studio flash and stand, so I decided that this weeks Movember update would be a good time to have a go at experimenting with a single light setup. This shot was taken using only the modeling lamp as I don’t currently have a way to sync the flash to the camera (to be be purchased soon). Along with a sync cable/radio triggers I’ll be buying a shoot through umbrella to complete my basic flash setup. I was also given a speedlight as a birthday gift, so I have plenty to get me started. Not having any of the extras at this stage, however, meant I had to use the bare the light with no modifiers .
I’ve been taking photos for years now but being primarily a landscape/urban photographer, flash is something I’ve never really had to use much. Perhaps now is a good time to start expanding my knowledge.

Ignite
So having taken a fair number of shots of Beachy Head lighthouse (see last post), the incoming tide forced us to make our way back around the cliffs. On our way we noticed a gap in the clouds with some sunlight poking through. Realising it wouldn’t last long we quickly headed toward a flat patch of sand (just a few meters away) to set up to capture the light before it was gone. It lasted just a few minutes.
Really pleased I captured this and when I saw it on the computer screen it cried out to be made black and white. I’ve gone for my usual high contrast look to really emphasise the drama.

The Chapel
A derelict chapel slowly crumbling lies forgotten in the woods. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Movember update:
Week One has gone fantastically well having raised £125 so far! I’m finding it weird having to remember to shave every day but have settled into a routine. Below is a photo of me from earlier today so you can see my mo progress so far.
